Jaffe and White in 2010!!!….there were even TWO rallies for them!

Okay, okay, Allyson and Chris kind of took over the rallies.  So the only two names we had to look forward to were Jaffe, as in Allyson, and White, as in Chris.  Between Washington politics, comedy stylings, and the simple hustle and rush of a wedding, a really fantastic wedding took place at the Old Ebbit Grill, thank you as always Bobbilyn! All was made clear of what family and friends were in store for with the buttons alone.

Those pre-wedding jitters were there, though the inside joke was that they were just doing a dry run, having already taken advantage of a municipal facility to keep things on the up and up.  No, just one of the little laughs was how people who make their way in the world up in front of strangers and friends at all times, could still, at the appropriate time, stop and be in awe of each other. Most men I know will never be in a wedding dress, at least not if they win all their bets, but most every woman I know has or will. Almost to a person they talk of feeling the eyes of the world on them, that they are visible to everyone. Allyson, as adorable and beautiful as she is, felt the same thing, all those eyes, it’s just she probably doesn’t remember the sensation from when she was small. Allow me to wax romantic, there are few things in our lives as consistently and undeniably optimistic about ourselves and individuals or societal as a wedding. Take away all the circumstance and matching chargers, and you are left with one thing, the wedding dress. People from everywhere respond to the dress, more visceral than any flag or slogan, and more universal. From the white western dress to the Saree styles, or magnificent Hanbok, people stop and see and wonder about it all. Even before the most jaded cat call, every bride, from every place, causes the breath to be held and the eyes to widen just a little bit more.

Allyson was no different to all but one, and he was Chris.  To make people laugh is his gift, on this day Chris also made a gift of all his attention, all his focus, and all his smiling to Allyson. She was radiant, and charmingly self aware. That wedding gown does cut both ways it seems.

Not so with the reception I should add, With the rooftop cocktail party, and a stunning sunset over the White House, every one of the guests was treated to a beautiful DC evening; a little warm, a little sticky, and a lot of people. That’s not even counting the Karaoke, the Washington Post, the lip synching of the Backstreet Boys/N-Sync/Miley Cyrus….yes, it’s true, all the guys knew all the words to the Miley Cyrus stuff, who’d have guessed?

The Luckiest Wedding ever! Bridget and Rick 8-14-2010

Small surprises will always come about on even the most carefully planned wedding day. Some were carefully planned; Ricks gift to Bridget of a lovely charm bracelet filled with places they had been to in their first year together and wrapped in the paper of her very first gift to him. **Note to Brides and Brides to be, and aw what the hell, all women in general…when men save stuff like that..Don’t give us a hard time about it, we DO have a plan in mind!** Bridget’s Grandfathers pocket watch was a nice planned surprise for Rick as well, ditto the nice weather, in a city where a breeze in August is reason to cheer, the low temp was a blessing. Other surprises are well, not as much hoped for; Timelines that get pushed back, hairstyles that don’t always suit the recipient, hotel printers that can’t print out the toast/speech (I happen to like hand written better myself). Certainly some are in the realm of, “You can’t be serious”  Hotel fire at the Willard, thankfully nobody hurt, caused a bit of a crunch at the JW Marriott, who I must comment were absolute troopers when it came to accomodate guests from both the Willard (other bride) and the National Press Club – Bridget.  I guess the line in Wedding Crashers was correct, “Everybody wants to be part of the magic”.

Needless to say, a bit of a twist on events from first dance song delivery to the content of the toasts. Our Groomsman, Tap, husband of the sister of the groom, waxed poetic in the toast  that: -paraphrasing here-  “It said that  rain on the wedding day is good luck, so certainly with any misfortune that could occur on your wedding day; rain, earthquake, fire in the electrical subbasement at the Willard Hotel. Your marriage is stronger because the disaster or misfortune has occurred on the happiest of days” “To start amidst misfortune is to strengthen the ties that bind because difficulty can be overcome by happiness” , so between the rain and heat, much over from the day before, this  little bump in the road guaranteed that this would be the, Luckiest wedding ever!”

Hey, I said paraphrase!

Here comes baby #2!

Heather and Bill and Z are all set for the second baby, and the big brother, who I’m told is convinced it’s a baby sister, is starting to explore the possibility, that something might be in HIS belly too!

Big Brother has smiles for the family and the rest of us. New baby coming soon, be on the look out for her/him? in a few weeks!

Weekend at St. Michaels with flip flops!

Kelly and Jeff, together 10 years, from the slideshow and our first meetings, together forever. Jeff whose description in the toast went like this “He’s so calm and laid back, you know he’ll never get a heart attack”, Kelly whose attention to detail made it all come about, was straightforward and loaded for dancing, which as it turns out, began just after their first dance song began. The two of them know each other so well, that when it came time for the first meeting of the two in their wedding gear on, Jeff asked if she heard him talking to himself, the reply was…I stopped listening! Oh yeah, the comedy of couples. It may read snarky, but anyone who has ever been in that fantastic give and take we experience when we are just riffin with our significant other, it’s like a dance itself.  And the two of them did dance, they rode, they brought everyone together to make the night, another fantastic night if I can quote the casual small talk related to the weather, just a winning moment.

Special thanks to Emily Hoerner, without whom, the hair would never have been done and I wouldn’t have met Kelly and Jeff. A big congratulations to Stacey and George, engaged, but not to each other, and their respective partners, great pictures, wonderful to meet the families and even better to present you all with the pictures.

Maybe the Stilt walker had a GPS – Nicole and Sankar 7-30-2010

When we first sat down to discuss the details of the wedding day Sankar was insistent, “What do we do if it rains?” In April it seemed a distant possibility that rain in July would be coming…then there was the “storm that wasn’t a storm” which was in the middle of  July2010, better know as the summer of steam. Imagine the relief, collectively, it really was quite nice outside. when the temperature dipped, and the humidity came down to post dinosaur levels. It looked to be a great wedding day. Though not without it’s perils, DC is an interesting place to drive even for the locals. Come in from outta town? You are really going to want to jump a cab!  So 45 minutes done the hard way, and Nicole and Sankar were jumping the broom and getting ready for the Malcolm X Drummers and Dancers.

A dance troupe with a chorus of drummers and a stilt walker, fantastic is to small a word, so I hope the pictures do some justice to it all. Fantastic wedding you two!
