Hand in Glove

Just what is it that keeps us glued to the couple in the corner? No, not the ones whose faces are locked to each other separated by the briefest of moments, in what one can only assume to be a breath of fresh air, rather that OTHER couple. The ones who laugh and joke, tease and cavort and dance as if they practiced the moves over and over before some tryout that they never told you about.

Yes, Trish and Brian are THAT couple, easy to be around, full of affection for each other and absolutely hilarious to watch interact. It’s not a show, they do this whether it’s their wedding or home at the table. Easy, simple comfort, and finally evidence that “sense of humor” really is an important quality in a mate.

Virginia Tech is a big school, you bump into thousands of people each time you step on campus, Trish and Brian bumped of course, first at a mixer, then a few months later at Hokie House in Blacksburg. Fate steps in, and in October 2009, a first date was made. Brian chose Macados, initially thinking “hey, I’ve got a gift card, this will be great”, then realizing that on a first date, maybe using a gift card…not such a good thing. Definitely a 2nd or 3rd date kind of thing, marketing types of the world take note!

With an engagement session at Tech, followed by a wedding in the loveliest little chapel in Virginia the Historic St. Mary’s Church, and then a wonderful time at the International Country Club in Fairfax, we barely even noticed the rain!

Huge thanks to Chrissy Salvador for planning the event, Laura Leonetti from the International for being so incredibly warm and helpful, and certainly Tony DeFilippo for all his excellent work that day too!

From DC to Paris and Back to DC, Andrew and Wayne

It’s always that conversation that you remember, the one where there was always something else to say. When every single thing the other person said had some tone of familiarity to it and you couldn’t wait to hear, and share, more. The surroundings, in this case the second of the Clinton Inaugurations Balls, sort of fade away and all you can ever tell years later is how great it was to be around that person. Eventually pulled back to their companions they exchanged numbers.

We know how it works from there; we tell our friends and co-workers of the handsome new person, so full of passion and fire, and how we wouldn’t have moved from the conversation if wild horses had tried to pull us apart. Wayne let Andrew call first, five days of chatting up the lovely man to all those around him, so that when the phone rang in the office, surreptitious glances and giggles filled the air. Better to meet in person for a coffee.

February in Washington D.C. can be a cold month, and coats need to be closed, or so Wayne is always told, a gallant Andrew wrapped Wayne in his scarf to ward off the chill. For those who own dogs or cats, that first meeting is always another time to hold the breath, Wayne’s Cocker Spaniel Tipper was to be the next test. Andrew, as many passionate people will relate, are animal lovers, that animal within always enjoys the animals around, suffice it to say, Tipper was as charmed as Wayne, and the wheels were set in motion.

Fast forward to Paris in 2009, with the ring in his pocket, Andrew looked for the perfect place to put it on Wayne’s finger. Paris, most would admit, is a pretty perfect place to propose marriage to anyone, but always an attention to detail, albeit already on bended knee, prompted the change in venue from in front of Arc de Triompe, a monument to war, to a little further down the Champs-Ellysees. Why begin a life together in front of a monument to war, when you have so much more to choose in the City of Lights.

So now we have a wedding to plan, timed in conjunction with the Cherry Blossom Festival, and in memory of Andrew’s time in Japan, a ceremony in the Meridian Hill Park in Northwest DC, and a reception at Meridian House, brought together family and friends from around the city and globe to celebrate the simplest of things, never wanting the other person to stop talking to us.

Don’t you just love watching the wedding unfold? The dress, the smiling bride in it, the groom, all bluster and confidence with his friends and family, holding back tears when he sees her walk into the ceremony?

Yes, it’s always the couples whose eyes rest solely on each other who make us stare and smile. What memories fill their head with each step towards the other? Is it the rehearsal dinner? Filled with well wishes and the laughs? Is it the engagement? Where words barely made it through heartfelt tears when the question was being proposed? Could it be the first time they realized they were meant for each other?

The answers part like the morning fog on the Potomac as the boats row through, what matters is the journey, the particulars make for great stories, those stories make us smile when Shannon steps closer to Quinton.

Always the thanks to the people at Sequoia DC, Scott Moon and Lindsey Schneider are the most wonderful of hosts and the most able of planners, and the most wonderful friends.

Shannon and Q, Congratulations on your day, very much looking forward to hearing about the honeymoon….

When fate lends a hand..Jeff and Daniel 10-9-11

Jeff knew that he wanted to meet Daniel, friends had even said so. “There’s this guy…”, a refrain so many hear, so often it’s part of our single adult lives. Jeff and Daniel were also, an additional part of our culture, nervous, they had said “hello” online 3 weeks before the first date. You get to know things about someone online, but you always fill in the blanks for things that can’t possibly be covered in an email.

So January, 9, 2008 at the Regent Thai house close to Dupont Circle, they met and talked and talked through dinner. It was a conversation powered by the kind of excited electricity that goes through your veins when you can’t get enough of either the conversation or the person. After dinner Daniel was about to walk home, Jeff seized the moment, and Daniel, and they had their first kiss. Daniel says that he’s glad it happened, and it confirmed Jeff as “the ONE”, Jeff called it a bold move. Boldness can win the day it seems.

Fast forward 2 years, lives created, marriage proposal given, and a date set. With the wedding among friends and family at Anderson House in Washington DC, a walk was planned to bring them both to their ceremony. Every couple plans their wedding day with the idea that, while a fabulously special day, the clock moves as it always does. Every couple finds out how long the minutes drag until those clothes are put on, and then the hours turn to quicksilver. Every emotion, every day and every friend with whom you want to share some last tiny bit of gratitude for being there swims past the eyes and fills your heart. Hands comfort others and the watches are looked at, and then looked at again as if they can somehow slow time for just a little bit longer or explain why just one more hug will last so long. The fumbling of ties and the examination of knots. Could there be anything more deliciously dizzying then knowing the next few hours will bring you together with your most loved partner and friend, yet infuriating in that the time moves fast and slow.

You want to say “I’m here, just around the corner, not much farther now” memories side by side with the sweet expectation of each step. The walk up the aisle holding his hand in yours, then you turn and look into his eyes, as brightly lit as yours, and you see the place you have always known as home, the two arms, the warmth of his kiss, what will always be the harbor at the worlds end.

Jennie and Vince Antrim 1844

Just what sort of thing is chemistry anyway? We’re not talking Sodium and Chloride here, we’re talking people. There will never be a reason as to why someone understands that duck sauce and mayonnaise are the worlds greatest condiments, we just accept that it is so. When an actor meets a photographer (and manager of one of the best little restaurants off Rt 108 …Iron Bridge Wine Company) who knows where the sparks may land. In this case, Jennie, Vince, all the sparks, and not an insignificant amount of friends and family all plopped down in August at Antrim 1844 in Taneytown Md.

Just a 170 year old building and garden for a wonderful wedding, with huge thanks to Daniel of Antrim 1844 for all the hand holding and special thanks to my assistant Martin dela Paz those pictures on the balcony were fantastic! Kelly Small from Amie Decker Makeup, beautiful flowers from Roberta Salcedo and Bella Fiori Florists…wow, this is just the thank you list…

Congratulations of course to Jennie and Vince for not only a beautiful wedding, but being able to spell backwards with sparklers in the dark!

They met in the middle..

Middle school that is, TJ and Caroline, friends and schoolmates for, well pretty much as long as they could have friends, middle school in this case.

Take away years for college, both Caroline and TJ call it “a grey area”, then add the triumphant return, when as the maid of honors toast would proclaim-try to “tear Caroline’s eyes off of TJ when he’s working in the yard without a shirt” Which goes a long way towards why TJ wanted to wear shorts to the wedding, they met in the middle again, this time with sandals for the groom and groomsmen.

Yes, it’s like that. Going together for five years, friends still with all those they went to high school with. Throw in a fabulous sunset at Oxon Hill Manor and being surrounded by all the friends and family who can make it to the wedding.

Thanks as always to the wonderful families and the firefighters from TJ’s Company! Don’t forget to check out the beautiful flowers all handmade by one of Caroline’s Bridesmaids! Absolutely fantastic!

Whatever you do, don’t fall into the infinity pool!

A beautiful day awaiting Taylor and Lenny at the Chesapeake Hyatt in Cambridge Md, a week after Irene had passed through, and a few days before Lee gave us a soaking, the air was dry, the sky clear, the humidity low, and the infinity pool beckoned, but more on that in a moment. Take a spark plug personality, all snap and smiles, combine with a laid back jokester, who waits for you to come to him to make yourself laugh, and you know much about Taylor and Lenny. Calm through all proceedings, even the last minute table placards completion process, we have in front of us the cool breeze couple, ready for a good time, enjoying the day, keeping in mind that this is a party day, not a day for stress and mayhem.

Now the pool..

Lenny, in typical fashion loving a good joke, pretended to nearly fall into the pool, ah, but the best laid plans! Nearly a slip with the associated “O” face kept us all in stitches! Now, had the groom been dunked, well kept us in towels is more like it. Let us not dwell on what could have been, but instead enjoy what was! Thank you hugely to Kate Hopkins from the Hyatt for being chauffeur, best friend and all around pal throughout the day and night!
