When a wedding isn’t a wedding

Some are nervous, some completely calm, whether they are brides or grooms, there is always something different on each wedding day. Wedding photographers are often, and sometimes rightly, accused of photographing fish in a barrel. That each wedding is the same and the “dark side” of photography treats them all equally. Well, last night was the third wedding in as many weekends that was a bit unconventional, separated widely by cultures and customs, locations and food. In each I took a little more away about how the world sees the couples.

April and Gil, Nancy and Bjorn, Sarah and Nick. They were all so happy so full of smiles, some tears, and in with Gil, a lot of cheesin’ for the camera.  The common thread I saw in them all, was how much they were enjoying the wedding as the time they were to be married, no fretting over place settings and introductions. They were thrilled to be at their wedding, relieved that the planning was done, and thrilled to be in each others arms.

I am properly labeled a romantic, I believe that the best relationships have loads of laughter and kissing, and I would be happy to lay cash money down, that despite what our cynical sides believe about romantic movies, people do take a moment when they see that heartfelt kiss with a hug, we respond, we watch, a side of us smiles and takes in the emotion. I saw so much of it with Gil dipping April all throughout Lafayette Park and the Jefferson Memorial, I say it with Nancy’s happy tears coming down the dock to marry Bjorn (and I saw a lot when he fired his cannon from the boat). I saw it in Sarah’s big smile, and lots of perspiration on the hot humid walk from outside  3rd street to the Library of Congress.  Where I think we almost had a bride down, those dresses are HOT!…and I’m not talking honeymoon nights either.

How they manage it can’t be because they are thinking about chargers and formals, but because they are so excited, taking a line from Nora Ephron, ” for the rest of their lives to begin as soon as possible”

And I get to be there, grinning like a fool, and always cheering them on. ** There are a bunch of pictures here, so look carefully!**
